Cawthorne Choral Society is a friendly, non-auditioning SATB choir based in the beautiful South Yorkshire village of Cawthorne
Our repertoire spans centuries of choral music, from Renaissance anthems and Baroque masterpieces to English folk songs and contemporary works. We welcome singers of all abilities: our size gives less experienced singers the support to grow while providing experienced singers with opportunities to develop and perform solos
Our developing Educational Programme gives aspiring young musicians opportunities to build their skills through mentoring, focused rehearsals and performance

our events
Our concerts, rehearsals and socials (following rehearsals!) are rooted in the village of Cawthorne, which we consider to be our home. We will always feel comfortable and at ease performing here as we have for almost a hundred years
We aim to produce three concerts locally every year, though recently we have branched out into different venues, for example, the beautiful setting of Howden Minster
Our spring concerts generally focus on more complex works, with a lighter programme to suit the summer season. Our Christmas celebrations feature traditional favourites as well as a few newer pieces to keep us all on our toes!

Celebrating our centenary by reprising the Society’s first performance of The Messiah in 1927
Accompanied by a Baroque Chamber Orchestra, soloists and guest singers. This will be at Penistone Paramount and will launch the 2027 Penistone Arts Week

Come and sing -

A magnificent afternoon of shared music making culminated in a spectacular performance of Baroque music at our Come and Sing Day in September. We were joined by more than 40 singers from all over the country and accompanied by the wonderful Baroque in the North chamber orchestra.
The intensive preparation bore fruit during the public performance which comprised extracts from Messiah along with works by Purcell and Pergolesi. The performance was greatly enhanced by some talented young soloists who were a joy to hear. Our audience were warm in their appreciation of our efforts and who knows, this might become an annual event!

Cawthorne Choral Society is looking for new singers to join our friendly, long-established choir.
We welcome singers across all voice parts, including sopranos, altos, tenors and basses. Whether you’re an experienced choral singer, returning to singing after a break, or simply looking for a new musical challenge, we’d be delighted to welcome you.
Our choir enjoys performing a varied repertoire of classical and contemporary music, bringing together great music, enjoyable rehearsals and the pleasure of performing as part of a choir.
You don’t need to be a professional singer — enthusiasm, a love of music and a willingness to join in are what matter most.
