a brief history
In the 20th century, Cawthorne joined the local tradition of community open air ‘sings’ to raise money for worthy causes. A large informal ‘choir’ came together in Cannon Hall Park to sing chorus from Messiah to raise money for Barnsley Beckett Hospital.
There was clearly great enthusiasm and enjoyment generated by this community singing because in October 1927 a meeting in the Methodist School Room in Cawthorne resulted in the first incarnation of the choir, known as the Cawthorne Mixed Choir, but which soon became Cawthorne Choral Society
We proudly follow a long history of local singing group groups in Cawthorne. The Cawthorne Musicians were a band of amateur singers and instrumentalists providing the music from the Gallery of All Saints’ Church in the 18th century.
Apparently, they were so unruly and uncooperative that they were stopped from singing by the Vicar! (We try to be a little better behaved…..)
But music did continue in Victorian times with groups coming together to sing Madrigals and ‘glees’
